Never Diet – Change Your Lifestyle

NEWSFLASH:  Diets do not work.  There are no shortcuts!

At least no healthy ones, anyway.  Sure you can have some hack stick the business end of a Oreck in your gut or take enough apetite supressants to wire your central nervous system but you will not be any healthier.  Diets do not work.  Diet is the key.  When you read of the latest diet you are not hearing about diet, you are hearing about a fad and none of them are healthy.

“What about the Mediterranean Diet,” you may ask, “Isn’t that suppossed to be healthy?”  When the phrase Mediterranean Diet comes up it does not mean a weight loss program, it means the diet of the people of the Mediterranean Sea.

What they eat everyday of their lives and yes that is as healthy as you will ever find.  There are tons of studies that show us a lifetime commitment to eating more whole grains, fruits and vegetables and a decreasing emphasis on animal protein (fish first, then poultry, and finally beef/goat/lamb/dairy/etc.) and sugar is the way to go.  Add in the proper amount of exercise and you have the recipe for a healthy life.  Do not do this and nothing else you do is healthy.  Proper diet and exercise is the way to go.

But the endless cycle of weight loss/weight gain is worse for your body than toting around that spare tire.  Need to know more about the Mediterranean Diet?  Check out the American Heart Association’s research.

Tuesday, Jul 15, 2008 @08:19pm CST

The Nestle Prepared Foods Company is recalling nearly 200-thousand pounds of frozen Lean Pockets spinach artichoke chicken sandwiches.
The company got complaints from consumers about pieces of plastic in the sandwiches.
While the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has received no complaints so far, two injuries have been reported to the Nestle company.
The recalled sandwiches were distributed nationwide, have a “Best Before” date of November 2009 on the side of each box and the establishment number P7721A.

iPhone v. Blendtec

I found this amazing story and video as written by Grace Leong – DAILY HERALD.

It shows what happens when an iPhone goes for a spin in the high torque world of a blender.  For those of you standing on line to get your new iPhone just think – this stunt has probably cost you another 15 minutes in the dang line.

Discovering Lincoln

State Capital TowerWhen most people think of Nebraska’s state capitol they think of college football, great steaks, and our twelfth President. Old Abe never visited Nebraska, but if he did he would be amazed at its cultural multiplicity. Sure Lincoln boasts all of the things that come to mind when you think of America’s heartland; eateries like Buzzard Billy’s Armadillo Bar and Grill, Huscker Bob’s and Brewsky’s Sports Bar are exactly what one would expect, but Lincoln is also a modern metropolis with a lot to offer the worldly traveler.

If gyros are your thing, then Ali Baba’s on North 14th and The Pita Pit on “O” Street are just a couple of the dozens of gyros stands in town. Inna’s Pirogi offers Eastern European cuisine, the Green Gateau is a classic European Sidewalk Café and Dish is a contemporary metropolitan meeting place with a multi-ethnic menu. Other world cuisines represented include Ethiopian, Cambodian, Sudanese, Pan African, Brazilian, and German.

The Haymarket District serves as the cultural epicenter of Lincoln and is brimming with bars, bistros, bakeries, and specialty shops. Among the noteworthy Haymarket refectories is The Oven which specializes in Tandoori cooking and Northern Indian cuisine. The Tandoor is a special clay oven which uses an open flame and is used to cook yogurt-marinated chicken, shrimp and fish to assure the tenderness of the meat. The Tandoor is also used to bake handmade breads. Also featured is Moghul cuisine, which is known for vast array of its lamb dishes. The Oven features an amazing wine selection. How good?  Ask Wine Spectator, who gave it their Award of Excellence.

Also in the Haymarket is Fireworks, which bills itself as “A Celebration of Wood-Fire Cooking.”  Fireworks combines all that is Lincoln: handcrafted beers, great cuts of beef, and a menu that reflects the diverse culture of the city. The 50 seat private banquet hall known as the Brewery Room at Fireworks provides a view of the neighboring Brew House via a glass wall. The varied menu includes Korean wraps, Southwestern Crab Cakes, Backdraft Brisket, wood fired pizzas, and, of course, the steaks that Nebraska is famous for.

As you can see there is a lot more to Lincoln than just wagon trains and touchdowns.
