A Great Gift!

Anyone who has ever lain awake in bed watching TV is familiar with the nefarious infomercial. Those 30 minute commercials where some of the worst actors in America pay the rent by pretending to be amazed by the wares they were hired to promote. Many of these products barely do half of what the advertisements claim while other actually exceed the claims.

For the past few years I have been memorized by one of these inventions, the AeroGarden by AeroGrow International Inc. It works on technology devised from the brainy folks at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama and was developed for NASA as a way of growing botanicals in space. Disney World currently employees the system in Orlando, Florida as part of the mega-park’s futuristic design.

Here’s how it works:

“The AeroGarden is the world’s first indoor

smart garden – It’s so easy to use that anyone,

with or without gardening experience can grow

lush, beautiful gardens right in their homes.

“The computerized AeroGarden tells you

to add water and nutrients. The micro-

processor automatically adjusts nutrient delivery

and water flow, and even turns grow lights on

and off to simulate the sun.”

As a chef, the thought of having fresh organic herbs, chilies, and vegetables growing on the counter right next to where I use them is amazing. This year a good friend bought be an AeroGarden for Christmas. It is currently sitting on a table growing. It consists of four parts that easily snap together and two packs of seed pods to get me started. I currently am growing basil, purple basil, cilantro, dill, chives, mini jalapeños, and Thai red chilies.

In the coming weeks I will keep you abreast of how the garden progresses. According to the instructions I should be harvesting in about 30 days and if I tend my garden properly it should yield for six months. Incredible.

My vision is to one day have a baker’s rack filled with about four of the things. I think it would look beautiful and would give me a good assortment of herbs and veggies to chose from. AeroGrow if you are listening and need a celebrity endorser I’m waiting.
